Bio
Zaizen Hikari

Hikari grew up as a bit of a loner. Intellectually, she was a few steps ahead of her class, and tended to hold herself apart from them as a result. She wasn't unfriendly, as such; on the contrary, she was outgoing, outspoken and adventurous, often the pioneer of the girls in her class. This only served to bolster her burgeoning superiority complex throughout school.

Her interest in music was apparent from a very young age. She had a fondness for xylophones and toy keyboards as a toddler, and would bop up and down to anything with a beat. As she grew, so did her enthusiasm and her talent. With her mother's prompting, she adopted piano lessons at age eight, flourishing there until she was twelve.

It was around that time that her parents began to grow more concerned about something that they'd noticed over the years — Hikari had no friends. This was at a point in her life when most girls her age were surrounded by more friends than they knew how to maintain. Concerned, her father encouraged her to join a school club when she entered middle school. As she had little interest (but no real resistance to speak of, either), her parents ultimately chose a club for her — the tennis club. An athletic pursuit would get her out of the house more, and being a team sport, would help to foster friendship, they hoped.

They weren't entirely wrong. Her first year there was rough, since she was unused to working in a team, but the atmosphere of the tennis club demanded that she cooperate with others, especially if she wanted to succeed — and she did. She proved to be a natural talent at tennis, much the way she was with anything musical, but a lack of teamwork prevented her from moving up in the ranks during her first year on the team.

Due in great part to the tennis club, Hikari branched out socially and grew emotionally, as well as continuing to expand her previous interests. She was swept into the club's social circle, where she was more open to her peers than ever before, and dropped her piano lessons in favour of the guitar, which she opted to teach herself. Like most girls her age, she also began to pay much more attention to her looks. She was quick to develop into a high-maintenance teenager, and along with makeup, jewelry and more fashionable clothes, she discovered a penchant for piercings. Her ears had been pierced since she was young, and her parents consented to having them pierced a second time.

Here, however, was where the battle began. Concerned with the impression their daughter would make, both at school and in life later on, her parents refused to allow any further modifications. It wasn't long after that Hikari, independent as always and increasingly rebellious, found a way around her parents' restrictions. She managed to sneak the next piercing past them, but when she coaxed her tennis coach into taking her to get her helix pierced — twice — her parents noticed. It's been an ongoing battle since; her parents are only looking out for her best interests in the long run, but like any teenager, Hikari is convinced she knows better.

Despite the conflicts at home, Hikari had secured a place on the regular team by her second year of junior high; as much a result of hard work and determination as of inherent skill. This brought her into the 'inner circle' of the club — while Shitenhouji was hardly cliquey, the regulars did possess a world all their own, of which Hikari was now a part. Throughout the year, the inner circle tightened as matches were won and lost, and Hikari found herself regarding the team on the whole as her friends, some closer than others.

Their team went to Nationals that season, to be eventually knocked out by Seigaku in the semifinals. Regardless of their loss, the experience was one Hikari would always treasure, and she has since made it her goal to return to Nationals next season as well — this time, leading the team. As always, she strives to be the best, and in tennis, the best of the best.
